What’s in my camera bag…

I often get emails from readers asking what I shoot with and what lenses I use.

I started with the Rebel, then 20D (which I still have), then the 40D. And YAY! I just pre-ordered the 5D Mark II from Amazon! If you are looking to pre-order this lens, you now can. Could I be any more excited?

As far as lenses, this is where the real investment comes in. Investing in good “glass” will make a HUGE difference in your photography. It certainly took mine to that “next level.” Plus if you change your mind, lenses often retain much of their value (unlike cameras).

I urge every one of you to try a prime lens, if you are a zoom shooter. For many years I resisted getting primes. I was lazy, did not want to “zoom with my feet” and felt I would miss shots. Well after a few years with prime lenses, I am in love. I rarely ever put my 24-105L on my camera (my former favorite lens). The prime lenses and being able to shoot wide at apertures of 1.4, 2.2 2.5… really changed the way my photos look and feel.

So what is my favorite lens now? I would have to say it is a tie between my 35L (most used lens for sure) and the 85L (which I suspect when I get my full frame I will use much more). The 50 1.4 lens is great too. I hope to buy the 135L and likely will sell my 70-200 2.8IS. Anyone looking for one?

Hope this was helpful information. If you have more questions, let me know.

ME! wow, first to comment…and I think that lens is the next on my list. So far I only have the 18-55mm. (ah, but price? No idea what they are valued at)

I am a Nikon shooter. But that new 5D Mark II is SWEET! And the launching price point is excellent.Agree with you that primes are the ultimate. I have 17-55/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 and a 50/1.8 and think the faster speed of the 50 and stronger contrast and incredibly sharp images rock! I hope to get a couple more primes in the years to come .. maybe a lens a year? :)Enjoy your new baby when it comes in!

I’ve been saving my pennies for the 70-200 mm is 2.8.. ( SO CLOSE ) and it’s killing me. So I am DEFINATLY Interested when you are ready to part ways! !I’ve been thinking about the 85mm too……… but since i do alot of 2nd shooting for weddings… the 70-200 is priority right now. HOw exciting you’re getting the new 5D. I can’t wait to hear what you think about it!

While I love my primes I can’t imagine living without my 70-200mm F2.8 IS L. My favorite lens by far. Although I don’t have the 85mm F1.2 (just the 1.8 version).

I started with a Canon Rebel XTi, too, and it came with Sigma lenses. And, I still have them as a backup. But, I totally converted to a Nikon … D300, actually. I was hoping to get the D3 (for the FX) by the end of the year, but then, lo and behold, the D700 showed up just two weeks after I purchased the D300 and the D700 is a full-frame! Ugh!!! I was so mad. I had already opened every package (ordered via Amazon.com) and used my D300 when I learned about the D700. Man, I’m still mad just talking about it!!! Boy, that Canon 5D Mark II looks PURR-DY!!! I’m torn between that and a D3 … it’s like I can’t have both or I’ll be broke! But, I already invested in my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 — which I love! — so, I gotta stick with Nikon.

Just order the 85mm lens through MCP and Amazon. One question which Ishould have asked before hand but these are brand new items, correct? Unless you click on the used link, is that correct? And do they sometimes ship sooner then the projected date? please say yes! lol :o)

amazon sells new products – and then they have that bottom area where you can buy used stuff. I always either buy from amazon or one of their vendors (like adorama) which it will say next to the price. I have not bought from individuals that come up under used. Not sure how reliable that is. Don’t want to take a chance. Hope that helps.Jodi
