“How I saved this girl’s photo…” A Customer Example

One of my customers sent me this example.  She photographed this teen with acne covered skin.  And by the time she ran the MCP Photoshop Actions – Eye Doctor, Magic Skin and then Powder Your Nose, she turned her into a photo the girl is proud to show all her family and friends.

Thanks for sharing Charlotte.

IMHO, I think the skin is just a bit too “powdered”. Her skin doesn’t look real. I would have used the Healing Tool to get rid of most of the acne, then Magic Skin and Powder Your Nose just a little. Eyes look great though!

I have to agree with Wendy. The effect is overdone, and makes the girl look more like a porcelain doll than a real person. I love the Magic Skin actions, but I just never bring them over 20% opacity because their skin ends up looking like this. I also would have used the healing brush to lighten the acne, and then given Magic Skin a run with a very slight opacity to smooth it out. Aside from that minor (and personal taste) nitpick, the picture looks great!

Beautiful! I bet the teen loved seeing her skin that smooth.

Jodi.. Just wanted to let you know that Lauren’s mom and aunt loved this! She was very excited how smooth I got it.. She placed a great order this morning! Thanks for being so talented! It may be too smooth for some, true .. glad it worked for her mom. Thanks for the comments guys.. 🙂

Ya, have to agree with Paul. This is a good example of how Photoshop can enhance an image, but the skin is way overdone. Looks too unnatural.

I have to agree with the others. The effect was way overdone. Her skin looks totally unreal and the underlying acne is still evident. Eyes look great though.

Just wanted to say that I most certainly intended my criticism of the above picture to be constructive. I checked back and it seems that most people agree that the effect was slightly overused on this particular picture, but I certainly don’t want the photographer who took the picture to feel bad that she submitted this. When I first purchased this action, I found myself overusing it too…one bride said, “Wow, I didn’t realize how much make up I had on that day!” Yikes! That was when I realized I needed to scale it back just a bit. I have now found a very nice balance between the healing brush and the magic skin actions. In the above picture, the girl’s hair, eyes, and teeth look fantastic, and I like the composition of the shot very much. I think a little more judicious use of the Magic Skin action, along with some practice with the healing brush, and this photo would be flawless. Please don’t think we are all being negative, I doubt that was anyone’s intent. 🙂

I think that retouching is for the most part a personal preference thing. When I edit I tend to go light on the opacity when using magic skin, allowing the skin to look more natural. But some people, certain seniors and also for pageants and such prefer super smooth skin. So I totally see what everyone is saying. I am happy Charlotte’s customer loved it. If I did it – I may have pulled back a tad. That is what is so great about the actions, flexibility. On the other hand, alien eyes – LOL – I cannot stand when eyes are way overdone. That just creeps me right out :)Jodi

Paul – no offense.. and you are right.. I should have used the healing brush to clear up the unlerlying acne… I am too, glad, the customer is happy with it.. I did not take it as negative at all… Jodi- yah think her eyes are overdone here?

Nope – the skin was more than I personally would do – personal taste. The eyes are exactly how I would do them – they look perfect!
