How to Straighten Your Photos in Photoshop

June 1st, 2009

This quick video will teach you how to straighten a photo and even out your horizon line in Photoshop using the ruler tool.  Angles and tilts can be fun – but sometimes you just need to straighten out your photo. And now you can.

Great tip as always. Recently took pics that I need to use this for so it’s perfect timing!

That’s actually faster than the way I had been doing it…I had always used the Lens Correction filter, but it has a bunch of other distortion corrections that you don’t necessarily need if you want a basic tilt correction. Awesome!

jodi-this is great! i actually was working on a photo yesterday & had gotten this tutorial from a forum, but needed to come & see you expanding your canvas tutorial because i didn’t have quite enough background for a good crop. i only wish my background didn’t include a brick wall because stetching those bricks was fairly noticeable! luckily, i didn’t have to go far to get the crop i needed.

thanks again, i have your site listed on my blog & i subscribe by email. you always have the best tutorials & information out there!

Great tip! I usually straighten and crop before sending it to Photoshop from ACR, but this is a great tool for the ones I shoot with the S5 and don’t have the option to process a RAW file. Thanks!

Thanks, Jodi! There was a tool in the sidebar for doing this in PSE, but when I switched to PS, I couldn’t figure out how to do it. So THANKS!! Very helpful;)

I was just trying to figure out how to do this! Thanks for the timely and informative video.

  14. 14. Kelly Says:

Hooray for the ruler tool! I’ve been missing the straightening tool in PSE and have been just using the crop tool for horizon lines and cropping and rotating while eyeballing it.

Here’s a better way to do this. Before you do the straighten, turn the background into a layer by ALT-double-click on the LOCK on the layer. This turns it from Background (Locked) into Layer 0. Then, when you straighten, you don’t get your background color as the newly-created area, but instead you get an increased canvas with the image as a rotated layer. Now you can apply layer styles (drop-shadow, etc.) and put a new layer underneath with whatever color (or gradient, or pattern, or whatever) as the background. Much more versatile, I find.

You can also straighten when you crop by moving the mouse outside a corner where you get the “rotate” cursor, then left-click and drag left or right to rotate your crop itself. Note that this isn’t as precise as the ruler method, but works in a pinch.

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I tend to shoot at weird ‘arty’ angles, and often I’d be stuck with a pic I loved, but didn’t know how to straighten out! Now I do!
