OK, I'm slightly confused... does this degradation happen only if you open and save the file - or even if you just open the file? Sometimes, for speed I flick through a gallery in windows photo gallery to see how they all look one after another - or (as I usually shoot raw + jpeg)I flick through my images to pick out which jpegs I'm going to do further work on - is this degrading my images? I know jpegs degrade, but seriously I thought it was over literally hundreds of openings and closings.... thanks

I've always wondered about this - thanks for researching and sharing! I always save my edits to psd too and go back to that if I want to re-edit, but still it's good to know the option is there if necessary.

Interesting! I would have thought otherwise. It certainly pays to experiment.

At the risk of sounding really creepy, I know exactly where this photo was taken! At first I wasn't completely certain, but after asking my best friend (who grew up in Goderich) she confirmed it for me. It's too bad this wasn't one of those "name the random location in this photo" contests - I may have won.
