Fixing Roots & Hair Color in Photoshop: Have you ever wondered how to easily adjust the color of roots or even the color of hair in Photoshop? This tutorial will help you out.
Thank you to Melissa Papaj for this super easy Photoshop tutorial teaching how to do a Quick Dye job in Photoshop. Once you learn this your customers will no longer need to hit the salons.
I recently had a client who had requested for me to fix her roots. Here’s a quick five minute fix:
First, select the Dodge tool at 9% and go over the roots.
Second, select the Healing Brush tool in color mode, unaligned and color the roots the same color as the rest of her hair by brushing over them.
Voila!

OMG ! I was just saying last night I needed an action to remove the gray hair and viola !! you are awesome Jodi =)
Amazing!!!!!!! Love it!
Awesome 🙂 I love photoshop!!!
this is awesome. I'm going to try it on a recent session I did. My client surprised her mother with a family session. Mom was thrilled but was a little unprepared. Hopefully this will help!
Where was this LAST week? I had to figure something out all on my own, and I'm sure your technique will work better!
Great tip! I also like to use the burn tool for “hair repair” for adult men with dark/black hair–sometimes their white scalp shows through and a quick/light burn makes their dark hair look fuller. I did this on a headshot of my 36-year old Uncle without telling him & he said “my hair looks great, can you do whatever you did to all my headshots you took?”
Seriously? It’s that easy???
Using the healing brush in color mode, awesome! Thanks for teaching me something new today!
Healing brush in color mode – what? Ohhhhhh, the possibilites! 🙂 Thanks!
Wow, that is much easier than what I have been doing to touch up roots — I’ve been cloning and oh my that’s tough getting the hairs all in the correct direction. This is MUCH easier. Thank you.
wonderful! thanks for the great tips! I learn something new every day!
that’s awesome! thank you!

That’s such a cool trick! Thanks for sharing this!
Worked perfectly! Thanks!
Great post. I need to do this for my own hair! 😉
You did great in minimizing the gray roots of the hair. I’ll try this trick myself.
Hi Jodi, I really can’t get this working. I’m trying to dye light roots to dark. But there is no healing happening, nothing changes.
