What is the Best File Format to Save Your Photos In?

January 30th, 2010

When editing in Photoshop, what is the best format to save photos in? Which makes the most sense for photographers?

To learn which file formats are best and which I use, check out my guest post on the Digital Photography School.

Digital Photography School is the publisher of the Photo Nuts and Bolts book. If you are a beginner photographer, check out this excellent e-book.

    Very good Post!

I save each (uncropped) image that I edit as a PSD that that I can go back and rezize to any crop ratio so my 8×10 matches my 5×7 matches my 4×6. When I am sending to the lab I resize my images to the right crop ratio and save as a JPG. (If I am ordering an 8×10, 5×7 and 4×6 of the same image, I do upload three different files to the lab). When I do anything for the web, or to save for myself, I save as a PNG. There is no quality loss and I can save to the web. I would use only PSD and PNG, but most labs that I have worked with will only allow uploads of JPGs.
