Even in the digital age, some traditional marketing materials are still needed.  One such item is business cards. Business cards are often the “piece you leave behind” that represents your company, your work, and your brand.  You need to make sure your cards make a statement and allows the recipient a way to connect with you later.

Today’s contest is sponsored by Color Inc Pro Lab, an advertiser on the MCP Blog. They printed my business cards and sent me samples using a few different finishes: gloss, pearl and watercolor.  They are all really nice, but for my particular cards, I am in LOVE with the pearl finish.  It gives the cards an almost metallic look and they are just beautiful in person.

Do you need new business cards? Color Inc. is giving 4 lucky winners 250 double sided business cards in the finish of their choice.

To enter (you may do entry 1 or 1, 2, and 3 for more chances to win) -winners will be picked at random on Sunday, February 28th.

1. Leave a comment on the blog for this post (not on Facebook) – and answer the following for your 1st entry:

  • What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?
  • Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?

2. Post one of the following to Twitter and/or Facebook (and come back and comment to let us know you did for your 2nd entry):

  • What information should be on a business card? Win 2-sided business cards by commenting here: http://bit.ly/mcpcicontest
  • Do you think photographers should have pictures on business cards? Win 2-sided business cards by commenting here: http://bit.ly/mcpcicontest

3. Ask your blog readers what they think business cards should have on them, by doing a quick summary of this post and its questions; then link them here so they can comment. Come back here and leave a comment with a link to your blog post for your third entry.

And for those of you who want to order business cards now, Color Inc is doing a promo for 10% off through Sunday the 28th of February by using the code: biz10.

•What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?
I feel like contact info is a must! How are your clients going to recommend you to others if you don’t have an email or phone listed by with which they can contact you? I also feel that some sort of website or blog needs to be listed that showcases your style & gallery of previous work.

•Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?
I do. I feel like you should show off some of your work. However, I think moderation is good in all things. Maybe limit to one or two images (I feel like specializing the card for the client would be an awesome idea)–potentially covering one side of the card.

  4. 104
    andrea says:

Phone number and website/blog/ business name and ofcourse your name.
I think photographers have different types of specialties that putting a photo would be tough to grab the attention of all the different clientell you could possibly have.

  5. 105
    LieLie says:

Logo and contact info, website is very important.
Not sure that photos are needed, can be limiting if you shoot a variety of things.

  6. 106

The Business card must include a phone number and website. Marketing 101! As to a photo… my old teachers at art school said ‘no – it looks amateurish’ but I do put one on my cards because to me, it says “photographer”!

    Shelya says:

    * What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?

Besides the business name ;) I think a website is most important to have – I want to see someone’s work before I even consider calling them.

    * Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?

I like to see a sample of the work on the business card. It gives me reason to go to their website to see more (or not to if I don’t like it). You need to have a reason that you are different from every other photographer out there and having photos on your card should differentiate you. It needs to be very specific to the type of work that you typically do.

    Kim K. says:

    1. I think it’s important to have your business name, phone number, web address, and email.

    2. I don’t think it would hurt a photographer not to have a photo on their card. Something that is simple and clean could catch your eye just as easy as a card with a photo on it.

as a photographer I think for sure put a photo on a business card than all you need is a number and a website…with a two sided card it would be awesome to be able to put a quick mission statement or something about yourself on the back.

    Amy says:

•What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?
contact info, website (obviously), plus on-location vs. studio

•Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?
Absolutely — the photos give potential clients an idea of your style

    Christine says:

A website address and business name with phone number are musts on a business card! I have the debate about pictures on a card or not, but lean to having pictures on the card so people can see a quick peek of your work.

  13. 113
    Silvina says:

Studio name, contact information and website are obviously a must. I’ve seen a few photographers’ business cards with photos on them and didn’t LOVE any of them to be honest…i personally just have my logo and contact info. on a very simple, classy card, and hope that just leads the prospective clients to my website.

  14. 114
    Taryn Pyle says:

I would love to win. I think its important for a photographer to have their niche on the card. If they specialize in wedding for example, or children. I also think its important for the card to have photos as it showcases the type of work you do.

    Caleb says:

    Photographer business cards:
name, studio, website, phone, email, specific areas of photography (weddings, portraits, babies, etc…) if any

There should definitely being some artistic visuals to the card, whether a photo or some other material

  17. 117
    Taryn Pyle says:

I posted the contest and the survey questions on my blog.

I am needing to get new cards printed right now, so this would be awesome. I have a 2-sided card already designed too! I have my logo, name, address, phone number on one side and my website and tagline on the other. I have considered “photo” cards, but it would be hard to pick just one photo that encompasses my whole style and the work I do. Great giveaway. Thanks!

  19. 119
    melissa says:

Definatly your business name, blog, site and probably your phone number. I think to much more and maybe it’s to much wording on there. And I definatly think I would put a picture on mine. I think it can kind of “sum” up your style if you pick the right one. It will either entice them or they will probably throw it away. So I guess you better pick carefully!

  20. 120
    ally says:

I think it is important to have website, phone number, and e-mail, studio name, person name. I like a photograph on the card, but have seen awesome cards without…

  21. 121
    Shana Qualey says:

Your web address is a must. Pictures are too! Photos will make people notice the cards and will reflect your style.

  22. 122
    Katy G says:

I think website, phone number, and any other contact info is the most important. I would love new cards..just got a new website, working ona new logo, and cards would be great!

  23. 123
    Breanne says:

I think the most important information to have on a business card (for any business) would be:

    1. Name (& Name of Business)
    2. Contact Info (i.e. phone/email)
    3. Location (if you have one)

For a photographer, I’d also say it’d be important to include either a link to your website (whether it’s a portfolio, blog, or all-inclusive) and again, location of your studio (if you have one).

As far as a photo on your card, I don’t think it’s necessary. I do think it’s nice though. I find business cards a lot easier to remember if there is something about them that sets it apart (whether that’s “had a bright orange logo” or “adorable baby” or “multi-colored background”).

  24. 124
    MegganB says:

    1. Your business name and contact info… also helpful is the types of photography that you do.
    2. I really think that this is up to the photographer – I personally like to show 1 or 2 but I totally understand if you’d rather not slap a picture on a 2×3 card.

  25. 125

I believe contact information and type of photography…yes…photo is a must..the right one can be inspiring!

  26. 126
    Christy says:

I think your web address and email are important to have on a business card. It is nice to have pictures on your cards to give perspective customers an idea of your style.

  27. 127
    Gretchen says:

Logo, Name, City & State, Web Address, & Phone number.

I feel it is important to have your best image on the card. It gives the potential client a little sample of your work that will hopefully leave them wanting more.

  28. 128
    Christy says:

    Just posted on facebook…

  29. 129
    Cortney says:

Most important thing to have on a business card is the website address. No need for a photo because the website has hundreds of them. Just my opinion.

  30. 130
    Kathy Austin says:

On mine, I have my business name, phone number, and website address. I wanted to keep mine very simple. I used one single photo that took up about 1/3 of the card. I cater to two different markets: portraits and horse shows, so I have the exact same card but with different photos for the different markets. I think the photo gives it impact and is a sample of your work. People need something that gives them a feel of who you are & your work so they need a logo or photo for that.

  31. 131
    Heidi Kreitz says:

I think it’s important to have website, phone and name. I also list the type of photography I specialize in (brief, one word description). And yes, I think it’s a good idea to have photograph(s) on the card, considering that we are promoting our photography! Personally, I am more likely to be interested in a photographer if I have seen some samples of their work.

  32. 132
  33. 133

This may sound odd but I only put my website for contact info. I would rather get emails than phone calls. it may be weird but it has worked.

I think they should have pictures but ti is soo hard to choose.

  34. 134
    Lindsey Pace says:

A website link is the most important piece of info on the card! I don’t think photos are necessary on business cards, but I DO think a GREAT logo is crucial! If the logo is not so great, then yes, there needs to be a photo also, but if the logo is fabulous…. no picture necessary : )

  35. 135

    1. name, number, website
    2. not necessarily, sometimes the photos are so small they don’t give justice to the image. But I think it is up to each photographer! :)
    Thank you!

  36. 136

    1. I feel business cards should have the name of the business, phone number, website and email.
    2. I like photographs on the business cards. I don’t think it’s a “have to” but I like it because it gives just a hint of the type of images that photographer takes.

  37. 137
  38. 138
    Marsha says:

Name, phone number and website! And if they specialize in anything in particular, list that too. I don’t think photos are necessary as the quality on a business card would be poor. However, a stylish logo is a must!

  39. 139
    Carin says:

I guess I always thought there should be a picture on a photographers card, but I suppose if it was creatively done it would look great without it. More room for infomation.

  40. 140
    Courtney says:

    1. I think the basic information. I like simple business cards. Simple, classy, elegant, understated yet speaks volumes. Here is what I would/will put on my business cards… Studio/Business Name, Name, Contact Phone, Website, and Email.
    2. Nah. I don’t think cards need a picture for these reasons – they are distracting, and it’s a small representation of your work so how do you choose which picture to put on it. Your branding logo is perfect for the card though. Show off your pictures through your website.

  41. 141
    Andreay says:

I think that a business card should represent you as an artist, so for me that means that there should definitely be pictures. If you aren’t proud enough to put your images on your card…should you have cards in the first place? I think the important information needed on business cards should include: Name, Location, Contact info (phone #, email) and also your web-page address.
Thanks for the giveaway…I REALLY need some business cards!

  42. 142

I think its important to have contact information for sure. A site address if you have one, a branding logo, and a number, email address or a way to contact you. I also think you need to have some sort of picture on your card whether it be a logo, or a photograph. Its hard with photographs because I feel they either make a great first impression, or they limit you right off the bat because one photograph definitely cant provide the genre you cover. Thanks for this opportunity! im excited!

    Vivien says:

Besides the basics – name, studio name & contact info I think it’s important to have a web address to either website or blog oh & e-mail address.
I also think they should have picures on it because I think it’s more memorable that way. If someone sees a picture on the card that they like they’re more likely to keep it as a visual reminder that they liked that picture & would want to use you in the future.

  45. 145
    Malea E says:

    Absolutely.
I think, obviously, contact info, web/blog info, maybe what they specialize in…
For sure pictures. People want a little taste of your style to even want to take the card with them!

  46. 146
    Dita says:

For sure the name of the studio, phone number and email address should be on the card and YES, I’m a big fan of a photo on the card too because I think that sets the tone and makes the card (and the photographer) memorable.

  47. 147

I think contact information, portfolio (website) address, blog, twitter & facebook.

I don’t think a picture matters. I think from a marketing standpoint they want something that will be memorable.

    dana says:

What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?
    Name, Website and Phone!

Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?
I think so….something that shows who they are. I have a few cards with families/children and a few with seniors…. I get a better result if I have a sample to show the potential clients. Plus if I use recent clients, THEY want to pass out cards for me! They are thrilled and enthusiastic as well. I stick with a standard style/branding for all the versions.

What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?
Business name, website, phone and email address

Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way? Absolutely! I think at least one photo is a must to grab the attention of potential clients.

I really need to update my cards so this would be awesome to win!!

  51. 151
    Nancy says:

Business cards should have all your important contact information on it (of course)and a catchy description of what your service is. For photography business, yes I do think a photo should be on the card. I like having a fairly transparent image in the background with the text overlaying on it.
    Thanks, ~Nancy

    jen says:

    Name, number, website
I think that you should have a photo on your card. duh. Makes sense to me.

  53. 153
    Heidi Brand says:

I think you need your business name, personal name if different and contact information such as phone and website on your business card. I am on the fence about the picture, but think I am leaning toward one picture on the card….many people are visual and it might be more memorable for them and draw them into looking at your website.

  54. 154

I like to have an intriguing photo on my business cards and just a website. Nothing else. I think it draws them in and provides some mystery and intrigue to motivate them to visit my website. Once they are interested and like my work, all my contact info is on my website.

  55. 155

I think the most important thing for a photographer to have on his/her business card is a website. This information is all that is necessary to direct customers to your complete information and portfolio.

I believe your photos speak for themselves. This is a great marketing strategy to have on a business card. Like a mini traveling portfolio.

  56. 156
    Deedra says:

Photographers definately need to have all contact info on their cards, and that includes facebook and/or twitter! As for photos, I think it’s a way to get people’s immediate attention and make that all important first impression!

  57. 157
    AJ says:

I’m the traditional type, so just name, phone, email and address. I do not think images work well for a business card, I save them for other materials.

  58. 158

    * What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?

I think the two most important items on your business card should be your website and a phone #/email where you can be reached. The website will allow them to see your work so they know if they would like to book you, and the contact info is key for them to get in touch with you once they’ve decided you’re the photographer for them! :-)

    * Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?

I don’t feel a photograph is needed on your business card. By not having one it makes the potential client HAVE to see more of your work by going to your website and that could be the deciding factor if they book you or not. What if you have a picture on your card that doesn’t appeal to that ONE customer. You could lose out on other potential customers by what one person thinks- we all know this is true since a lot of our customers come from other satified clients. :-)

  59. 159

I think the best things to have on your business cards is: a website so ppl can see your work and a phone number you can be reached at.

    Barb Ray says:

    1) the obvious stuff…Logo, contact info: website, phone, e-mail…then I personally think location, photo(s), and maybe the types of photography you do…but I’m not always sold on that…may be more than necessary
    2) yes…I want a great photo or photos on the card so it stands out…I want them to know without having to read that I’m a photographer

  63. 163

    * What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?
    Name or Business Name
Contact Information (Email Addr & Tel No)
    Website or Portfolio URL

    * Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?
Not necessarily. I they use an interesting and eye-grabbing graphic logo or text, it would likely be too busy. On the other hand a photographer who specializes in wedding only might use a sample image. The main point is to use graphics to identify yourself and your business.

  64. 164

Just shared this on both Facebook and Twitter.

    * What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?
Name, WEBSITE, phone number, and email

    * Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?
No. I think the web address is more important so they can see a good representation of all your work, not just one picture that could be one that they might not like even if they love everything else.

  66. 166
  67. 167
    Roxy says:

    * What information do you feel is important to have on a business card for a photographer?

Strong logo (studio name), website, email, phone and perhaps something that indicates your specialty
    * Do you think photographers should have photographs on their card? Why do you feel this way?
Yes, but this can also be a limitation. If you choose one kind of photo, then potential clients might overlook it if it is say a child’s photo, when you in fact photograph weddings as well, or they just might not be drawn to that particular photo like someone else.

Photographs on a business card? For photographers I believe business cards are like mini billboards and a perfect way to advertise your work, so yes I think a photo on the card is perfect!

  72. 172
    Kim says:

I think name, contact info is obviously essential. A website as they can check out your work immediately or later.
I think a photo makes a card stand out from the rest of the business cards…..as long as it’s the ‘right’ photo of course!
