Earlier this week, the talented Danielle Neal wrote articles about breaking into the dog photography market and on photographing pets. Today I will show three edits with one of her beautiful dog photographs edited using our Photoshop actions.
For the first edit, I decided to do a subtle look using the Color Fusion Mix and Match Photoshop action. I kept the One Click Color layer turned on and at the default opacity of 75%. Then I turned on Lemonade Stand and adjusted to 25% and Ellie’s Field of Dreams to 51%.
Next I started from scratch. This time using the exact same action, Color Fusion Mix and Match, I created a more intense, toned urban look. I adjusted One Click Color to 68%, and then turned on Urban Revival at 50%, Rustic at 20% and Desire at 50%. This was my personal favorite. I love how it brought the dog’s eyes to life. What an amazing photo. I can almost picture the sounds coming from the dog’s mouth and imagine what he was thinking.
Lastly, I wanted to try a black and white image. For this, I decided on a film like look. I used the Black and White Fusion Mix and Match Photoshop action. One Click B&W was left at the default 100%. I activated Reminisce at 27%, Timeless at 50% and Sunkissed to give it a light toning at 19%.
As you can see, each edit conveys a different feel and story. When you edit, often it is worth considering the story you want to tell and then edit to get it across. I’d love for you to leave a comment below letting us know which of the three edits you like best and why. If for some reason you prefer the original, you are welcome to note that provided you give reasons why it speaks to you most.

I really like all three for different reasons. The first because it holds the original color of her coat. The second because that’s the one I would want in a frame (colors are gorgeous) and the third because black and white is so beautifully classic. And this shows exactly what I deal with at my beginner level, I’m just not sure which avenue to take the photos… 🙂 Love this pet topic right now!
I actually like the original along with the black and white. I find myself drawn to more vivid/original coloring for dog photography. Dogs are so animated and each one has its own unique personality and I can see it more clearly with original or slightly edited photos. The editing is still very nice, though. Especially his eyes! What a handsome (boy?)!
I really like all three but I think the second is my favorite. It really pops and transforms a simple portrait into something more artistic.
I really love the second picture’s edit. It has more depth to it when you bring out the darker parts of the coat.I love black and white pictures- but for some reason, when I see them next to the color picture- I rarely like the B+W version. Maybe I’m weird.
Yes, the second is amazing! I like the colors of the mouth. The first one is beautiful, too.
LOVE these pet topic posts!! Would love to see more!
Dog photo editing should be clean and shouldn’t change how the animals look. LIghtening the eye or coat colors using presets etc changes their look dramatically. If anything, the composition shld be the utmost necessary in pet photoshoot. Everything else just just enhancing as minimal as possible without loosing the physical personality.
